10 Essential Tips for Summer Associates

summerassociatesKatherine Larkin-Wong and Grover Cleveland have 10 tips for law students at summer associate programs.  According to the authors, law students in summer associate programs should:

1.  “Treat your summer job as a forever job….”

2.  “Be assertive–take challenging assignments.”

3.  “Seek out feedback.”

4.  “Smile and be friendly.”

5.  “Show confidence.”

6.  “Focus on the firm’s needs.”

7.  “D0n’t ask questions where you can look up the answer yourself.”

8.  “But don’t spin your wheels for too long.”

9.  “Excel, and you will get a mentor.”

10.  “Acknowledge others.”

In my opinion, number six is one of the most useful tips.  The authors elaborate further, advising students to recognize that “…clients hire lawyers to solve problems.  That entails far more than research or drafting documents.”    For more information on the topic, use the library’s catalog, using a keyword search, to locate articles and books on the subject of summer associates.  Check out Calvin Gladney and Raymond Millen’s book, From finals to the firm : the top ten things new associates need to know including a bonus chapter exclusively for summer associates .
